When in Utah, play golf in Cedar City!
Cedar Breaks National MonumentOnce again, my Traveling with Francoise show took me to an unknown territory, Cedar City, Utah. What I imagined to be a small town sitting in the middle of vast flat lands, turned out to be a wonderful and beautiful historic place with so much to offer the traveler and perhaps, you.

Approximately 180 miles north of Las Vegas, off of I-15, little did I know how beautiful, affordable and interesting Cedar City would be. A lot of people tend to drive right on by when headed north to Salt Lake or south to Las Vegas.

I stayed at the lovely Iron Gate Inn Bed and Breakfast, within walking distance of Main Street, local parks, the University and the Shakespeare Festival. People visit Cedar City from all over the world to attend this Festival, as well as to visit Bryce Canyon or Zion National Park.

Yet only 21 miles away is the gorgeous Cedar Breaks National Monument where I spent an afternoon, with camera in hand, gazing in awe at the rocky spire formations rising 10,000 feet above the desert floor.

Do traveling golfers think of Cedar City as the place to stop and play? Not really, and that is why golfers are truly missing out.

Cedar Ridge Golf Course

While in Cedar City, I played golf at the only course in town Cedar Ridge Golf Course. A fun, well maintained course with scenic views in every direction, the cost is $22 for 18 holes, with cart. You don't need a tee time, and yes, it is almost too good to be true...shhhhhh, we'll keep it our secret.

And while you are there, make sure to say hello to John Evans, the Director of golf at Cedar Ridge. He has a smooth swing we should all try and emulate along with fantastic stories of life on the Tour and in Cedar City.

I also shopped on Main Street, went to the very informative visitors center, the Frontier Museum, the Iron Gate Winery, and frankly, didn't experience all that was offered during my four day stay. Throughout the trip I met friendly people, locals and travelers alike, who love this small community with a big city feel.

I will go back, of course!! I want to better my score on the golf course and see the things I missed!

My Experience: Love it! Love it! Love it! Located in Ventura County, and minutes from the coastline, Ojai is a one main street town surrounded by beautiful rolling hills covered in lush green foliage. I find the town of Ojai to be charming and full of surprises.

Still quaint, hip and trendy, Ojai has become a tourist destination without the usual fanfare. Visitors will not find a t-shirt shop, big box stores or fast food restaurants. However, guests will find a host of family owned businesses that range from fine dining and boutique clothing stores, to art galleries, a candy store and, of course, an ice cream parlor.

Located on the main street is the Oaks at Ojai, where was my resort of choice for my last visit. With a focus on health and well being the Oaks at Ojai is one place guests want to get on the scale after a day of delicious low calorie fare, lounging by the pool, fitness classes and lectures. It is a truly wonderful experience with a “no pressure, do as you please” attitude. While there, I dined at several spots, including the celebrity-studded Ranch House, delicious.

A must on the “to do” list is Bart's Books. I promise you have never seen a used book store such as this. They offer a selection of about 200,000 volumes, amazing. Take comfy shoes for walking up and down main street, enjoy an ice cream or visit the Theatre.

I was lucky enough to experience the incredible Taft Gardens, 80 acres of amazing and only available to guests of the Emerald or Blue Iguana Inns. There are many annual events in Ojai that are worth considering. Two first-class favorites are the World Music Festival and the Storytelling Festival to name a few.

Ojai is easy to find with exits clearly marked on 101 Freeway near Ventura. I will be going back soon and so should you, see you there!
